Where there is light, there is movement,
and where there is movement, there is story. "Gaylan Nazhad"
About The Workshop
Shanghai is a city of contrasts, where heritage and modernity coexist in every street, market, and skyline. This immersive two-day workshop invites participants to document the city’s social and cultural life with a cinematic and artistic approach, focusing on observation, light, composition, and emotion. Participants learn to approach the city as both observer and storyteller, creating images that move beyond simple documentation to reveal atmosphere, rhythm, and human interaction.
Workshop Overview
Over two days, participants develop a visual narrative as an art form, capturing the city’s rhythm from dawn to night. Sessions integrate urban, architectural, and human-centered photography, combining observation, critique, and guided practice to refine technical skill and creative vision. The emphasis is on producing images that are both documentary and cinematic, transforming everyday moments into expressive visual stories.
Workshop Structure
Day 1 | Observing the City
-
Morning | Traditional Heart of Shanghai
Explore narrow streets, markets, and historic lanes. Focus on observing daily life, gestures, and interactions, photographing people within their environment while treating each frame as an artistic composition with cinematic presence.
-
Midday | Urban Rhythm and Transitional Spaces
Capture movement, light, and reflections in bridges, riversides, and public transit hubs. Participants learn to translate dynamic urban scenes into visually expressive, narrative-driven images.
-
Afternoon | Modern and Heritage Layers
Document areas where traditional architecture meets modern skylines. Focus on timing, composition, light, and emotional resonance, emphasising the interplay of artistic vision and documentary storytelling.
Day 2 | Building a Documentary Narrative
-
Morning | Returning with Intention
Approach the city as a storyteller, connecting moments into a cohesive visual narrative. Develop sequences of images that communicate urban life, human interaction, and cultural context through an artistic and cinematic lens.
-
Midday | Human Presence and Urban Atmosphere
Focus on gestures, encounters, and interactions that reveal the emotional atmosphere and social rhythm of the city, emphasising expressive composition, cinematic light, and the narrative potential of each frame.
-
Afternoon | The City as Story
Conclude by integrating skyline, riverside, and urban life. Capture movement, light, and human presence to produce images that communicate both the documentary reality and artistic vision of Shanghai as cinematic story.
Note
This workshop is suitable for photographers of all levels who wish to engage deeply with urban life, culture, and human interaction as an art form. The schedule is structured but flexible, shaped by light, weather, and group dynamics. By the end of the workshop, participants will have refined their ability to observe, interpret, and capture moments rich in artistic, cinematic, and emotional depth.
