The Peak District is a landscape of contrasts, where dramatic natural beauty meets centuries of human history. From ancient villages and stone-built communities to open moorlands, valleys, and changing skies, this unique region offers a powerful environment for documentary photography.

This immersive two-day documentary photography workshop invites participants to explore the Peak District through a cinematic and artistic approach, focusing on observation, light, composition, and emotion. From rural communities and historic landscapes to quiet paths and dramatic natural environments, participants will learn to see the Peak District not only as a place to photograph, but as a living story shaped by people, culture, and nature.

Through careful observation and visual storytelling, participants will create images that move beyond traditional landscape photography to reveal atmosphere, character, and the connection between people and place.

Workshop Overview

Over two days, participants will develop a deeper approach to documentary photography, exploring the relationship between landscape, human stories, and everyday life. Through guided shooting sessions, discussions, image critiques, and personal mentoring, photographers will refine their understanding of composition, natural light, timing, and storytelling.

The workshop focuses on transforming ordinary scenes into meaningful photographs, combining documentary observation with a cinematic and artistic approach. Participants will learn how to create a visual narrative that reflects the unique identity of the Peak District and develop their own personal photographic voice.

Workshop Structure

Day 1 | Discovering the Peak District: People, Place & Stories

​

Morning | The Human Landscape

Explore historic villages, local communities, and rural environments where generations of stories are connected to the land. Participants will focus on observing everyday life, architecture, traditions, and the relationship between people and their surroundings. The focus will be on discovering authentic moments, visual details, and human connections that reveal the character of the Peak District.

Midday | Rural Life & Visual Rhythm

Photograph the rhythm of rural environments through streets, farms, pathways, and changing landscapes. Participants will explore how movement, weather, textures, and natural light can create stronger visual narratives. The emphasis will be on finding moments that communicate atmosphere, emotion, and a sense of place.

Afternoon | Between Heritage and Nature

Discover the relationship between historic villages, ancient landscapes, and the natural environment. Participants will explore how architecture, landscape, and human presence can be combined to create images with depth, meaning, and cinematic quality.

 

Day 2 | Creating a Documentary Story

Morning | Seeing with Intention

Return to the landscape with a deeper awareness of observation and storytelling. Participants will develop connections between individual photographs, learning how separate images can become part of a larger visual narrative.

Midday | Light, Landscape & Atmosphere

Explore the dramatic landscapes of the Peak District through changing weather, natural light, and seasonal character. Participants will focus on composition, perspective, and emotional response to create more expressive landscape photographs.

 

Afternoon | The Landscape as a Visual Story

The workshop concludes by bringing together people, architecture, and nature into a personal photographic series that reflects the identity of the Peak District and each participant’s own creative vision. Through image discussions and final feedback, participants will explore how documentary photography can transform a place into a meaningful visual story.
